CHAPTER FIFTEEN
Over the next hour I put together the team to stay and the team to leave. It wasnât an easy decision to make when I knew there was a lot to defend.
I was leaving many of the scientists. They had done a lot to get us this far, but Alice wanted to get to know Orjik and the creatures in his forest and study how well the serum was working on the Orantarians. I couldnât leave the portal, or them, defenseless.
However, Kryos and Jace persuaded me to use a little more magic to flood the area and keep the enemy held back, especially between the two locations we had decided to defend. It was working on Moreleon, so I agreed to it and completed the task while everyone else was restocking supplies.
Donnie and two units had also agreed to stay with about half the gryphons to act as basic protection, although they would spend much of the time behind the cloaks and most of the fighters would be at the portal to make sure we kept control of it. It was as good a defense as I could leave.
The rest of us would fly out in the direction Orjik had indicated Ranoctil had gone. I felt reasonably confident it was the right way to go as the handler from earlier had also gone that way. Orjik appeared to recognize her, which implied that she frequently went back and forth.
I considered it a good sign that some of the enemies traveled around. It meant they would likely come across our radar again and might even lead us to Ranoctil. Until then we would fly out that way and see if we could find them.
Although we had walked a lot of the way so far between places, we werenât going to do that now. Not only did we not have an obvious target close enough, but I wanted to be able to feel for the danger before we had to face it. Orjik had confirmed one other key piece of information. There werenât a lot of flying creatures left on this planet.
They didnât have many birds in the first place and only a few very active insects that acted as their pollinators. There were no flocks of birds the way we had them on Earth or like those Moreleon had boasted.
Because of it, we were safer in the air than on the ground. The enemy could hit us with very little.
I was in the front, feeling out and hoping that at any moment I would sense Ranoctil or the handler that had taken him away from me. The process was a struggle. As we got deeper into the enemy territory there were more and more corrupted. In every direction, I could sense them.
It was overwhelming after a while and there were so many of them that I struggled to distinguish the individual enemy and what they were.
âAre you all right?â Douglas asked me when I considered coming down to land to take a moment to relax.
